A page for seniors who are older but not "old"!! |
This page contains useful links and discount information for those of us who are Older but not old. Our philosophy is simple, just as a child of 15 is considered older than a child of 5, a person of 40 older than one of 30, a person of 65 older than one of 50, likewise a person of 75 is simply older than one of 65. These are all different age groups and yet society wants to lump every one over 65 into a stereotype "old person" who is over the hill and not of much use, a burden on society, not employable and who don't need to be listened to.
OUR aim is to change that perception. Many people over 65 including the author, still enjoy an active lifestyle, i.e. playing tennis, squash, swimming, hill climbing, canoeing, motorcycle riding, walking, running etc. etc....... We are the people who worked hard and payed our way to make the country what it is (or was before recession hit).
In N Ireland it currently costs £1350+ per week to keep a prisoner in jail.
The national minimum wage, considered to be the least amount needed to stay out of poverty is £232 per week.
A pensioner is given just under £100 per week to live , is this fair practice?
This winter some older people in our community will have to make the stark choice - heat or eat - is this fair?
Thankfully some organisations and departments are becoming aware of the huge market and spending power of the over 50's, it is only a matter of time till politicians will have to sit up and take notice of our voting power and consider our needs in a new way as we unite our voices. To accomplish this we need YOUR help if you are 50+.
Be a part of change- join a local senior's group or one of the new Sub Regional networks such as AGE-ND now being set up accross the land in conjuction with AGE NI and make your voice and you vote count. Remember there are now more people over 50 than under 19 years of age in the country and together we can make a difference.
